During meditation, focusing on the eyebrow center has significant value physiologically and metaphysically.

Pituitary Gland Function:
- Voluntary movement / motor integration
- Perception / Sensory / mind-body integration
- Temperature
- Appetite
Pineal Gland Function:
· Causes Feeling of Sleepiness
· Converts Nervous System Signals to Endocrine Signals
· Regulates Endocrine Functions
· Secretes the Hormone Melatonin
Table of Hormones Governed by the Pituitary Gland
|
Hormone |
Organ |
Function |
|
Adrenals |
Cortisol has a number of functions. It promotes normal metabolism; maintains blood sugar levels and blood pressure; provides resistance to stress and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. It also plays a part in regulation of fluid balance in the body. |
|
|
Thyroid |
Thyroxin controls many body functions, including heart rate, temperature and metabolism. It also plays a role in the metabolism of calcium in the body. |
|
|
Ovaries |
Estrogen facilitates growth of the tissues of the sex organs and other tissues related to reproduction. Estrogen also acts to strengthen bones and has a protective effect on the heart. |
|
|
Ovaries |
Progesterone promotes the changes in the uterus that occur in preparation for the implantation of a fertilized ovum and prepares the breasts for milk production. |
|
|
Testes |
Testosterone is responsible for the characteristics of the masculine body, including hair growth on the face and body and muscle development. Testosterone is essential for the production or sperm and also acts to strengthen bones. |
Pituitary gland and the brain
The hypothalamus is a collection of ganglia (nerve tissues) located below the thalamus and intimately associated with the pituitary gland. It has a variety of functions: senses changes in body temperature; controls autonomic function and activates and hence regulates the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems; links to the endocrine system and controls the pituitary gland; regulates appetite; functions as part of the arousal or alerting mechanism; links the mind (emotions) to the body.
Pineal Gland
The pineal gland synthesizes the hormone melatonin and secretes it directly into the cerebrospinal fluid, which takes it into the blood. Melatonin affects reproductive development and daily physiologic cycles. It also has to do with the nervous system and ‘basic instinct.”
The pineal gland secretes melanin during times of relaxation and visualization. As we are infused with electromagnetic energy (EM) and react to EM energy stimuli around us, so does the pineal gland.
Metaphysical Aspects of the Pineal Gland
When activated, the pineal gland becomes the line of communication from the spine to the crown chakra. Prana, or pure life force, is received through this line of energy. To activate the ‘third eye,’ the pineal gland, (body) breath, and mind must vibrate in unison. This is achieved through systematic relaxation and meditation. When a correct relationship is established between the body, breath and mind, a magnetic field is created and the interaction becomes strong enough to create what’s thought of as ‘spiritual illumination’.
Meditation exercises are the first step in directing the energies in the inner systems to activate the ‘third eye.’ The magnetic field is created around the pineal gland by focusing the mind on the midway point between the pineal gland and the pituitary body (the third eye). Creative visualization or a sacred sound (mantra) gives the mind direction and a point on which to focus.
‘Third eye’ development leads to greater awareness and accesses higher realms of potential. A by-product of these benefits is often thought of as extra sensory perception or intuition. Knowledge of being in the present moment in full waking consciousness occurs with increasing consistency, as the ‘third eye’ is stimulated through dedicated practice.
As human beings continue to evolve, the journey through the material plane is linked to a stronger sense of spirituality. The pineal gland will continue to rise from a state of age-long dormancy, bringing back capabilities housed in the nerves of the spinal column and beyond.
This abstract awareness is subjective and does not involve the normal level of mundane consciousness, which is mostly concerned with the ego or self-identity. At certain brainwave frequencies though, the ego vanishes. Resting deeply and yet, still conscious, the brain enters deeper states of consciousness and is less concerned with the physical. As the ‘third eye’ becomes more active, shedding the ego becomes more natural and the distinction more clear as does connecting with tranquility, balance, and equanimity.
